DECLARING THE PERIOD FROM AUGUST 5 TO 11, 2002 AS THE “PHILIPPINE WRESTLING WEEK”
WHEREAS, the Philippines has committed to host the IV SOUTHEAST ASIAN WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP in Manila on August 7 to 10, 2002;
WHEREAS, the sport of wrestling, which is one of the only five sports continuously played in the Modern Olympic Games since their inception in 1896, is included in the 2003 Southeast Asian Games to be held in Vietnam after an absence in three SEA Games after 1997;
WHEREAS, the Philippines has a strong chance to wrest the overall honors in the SOUTHEAST ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP, having finished in runner-up position in its last staging in 2000;
WHEREAS, it is an opportune time to remind the Filipino people of its erstwhile strong tradition of indigenous wrestling, especially in the mountain provinces and Panay island, on the occasion of the championship;
WHEREAS, to ensure the success of the sporting event which brings closer the youths in the region, the cooperation of both the public and private sectors is essential;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GLORIA MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare the period from August 5 to 11, 2002 as the “PHILIPPINE WRESTLING WEEK” and direct the Organizing Committee of the IV Southeast Asian Wrestling Championship to act as the lead agency in planning, disseminating information and conducting the sporting event.
All heads of departments, bureaus, offices, agencies, local government units, government-owned and controlled corporations and instrumentalities of the government, particularly the Philippine Sports Commission, are hereby directed to give full assistance to the Organizing Committee of the IV Southeast Asian Wrestling Championship.1aшphi1
