[ Proclamation No. 167, March 25, 2002 ]

DECLARING THE WEEK OF MARCH 24-31, 2002 AND EVERY YEAR THEREAFTER AS BIMP-EAGA WEEK

WHEREAS, the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-the Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) sub-regional cooperation was formally created on March 24 to 26, 1994 in Davao City;

WHEREAS, the BIMP-EAGA was primarily intended to spur development in the lagging sub-national economies of the member-countries, including Mindanao and Palawan – the Philippines focus areas for this sub-regional cooperation;

WHEREAS, the Philippine government recognizes the role of the BIMP-EAGA, in the development of Mindanao and Palawan, even adopting it as one of the key development strategies in increasing trade, investment and tourism;

WHEREAS, the Philippine government renews its commitment to the BIMP-EAGA, and leads the EAGA member countries in pursuing revitalization efforts of the growth area initiative;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GLORIA MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare:

Section 1. The week of March 24-31, 2002 and every year thereafter shall be observed and celebrated as the BIMP-EAGA Week in Mindanao and Palawan;

Section 2. All government agencies are enjoined to observe and celebrate the BIMP-EAGA week with appropriate ceremonies in their respective areas;

Section 3. The MEDCo, being the Coordinating Office for the BIMP-EAGA shall lead the preparations for the celebration of the BIMP-EAGA Week and ensure Mindanao and Palawan-wide celebration;

Section 4. The funding for this activity shall be borne by the individual agencies concerned;

Section 5. This Proclamation shall take effect immediately.1aшphi1
