MALACAÑAN PALACE MANILA BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES [ Proclamation No. 228, January 13, 2000 ] CHANGING THE NAME OF THE NAGTAHAN LINK ROAD TO PADRE JACINTO ZAMORA BRIDGE WHEREAS, the Nagtahan Link Road is a bridge linking Pandacan to Sta. Mesa in Manila; WHEREAS, Jacinto Zamora was a true Manileño, having been born in Pandacan on August 14, 1835, receiving his early education in Pandacan and later at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran where he completed his bachelors degree and at the University of Santo Tomas where he pursued degrees in Theology and Canon Law in 1858; WHEREAS, after his ordination, Father Jacinto Zamora served as a parish priest in Marikina and Pasay and later appointed as examiner of the new priests by the Archbishop of Manila, together with Father Jose Burgos; WHEREAS, both priests became outspoken members of the Committee Reformado, campaigning for liberal reforms and for the return of the parishes to the secular clergy, which alarmed the Spanish authorities and the friars; WHEREAS, the uprising in the Cavite Arsenal provided their enemies with the opportunity to implicate them falsely and, along with another priest, Father Mariano Gomez, were accused of sedition, tried at Fort Santiago, and sentenced to be garroted publicly; WHEREAS, the hideous garroting of Father Jacinto Zamora, together with the two other priests nurtured the fight for freedom and served as a catalyst for nationalistic fervor; WHEREAS, the renaming of the Nagtahan Link Road to Padre Jacinto Zamora Bridge is a fitting tribute to the memory of the most prestigious son of Pandacan, one of the three secular priests whose martyrdom kindled the flames of the Philippine Revolution of 1896; NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH EJERCITO ESTRADA, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby proclaim and declare the change of name of the Nagtahan Link Road into the Padre Jacinto Zamora Bridge.
