DECLARING 14 FEBRUARY 1998 AND EVERY YEAR THEREAFTER AS “BARANGAY HATAW FITNESS AND SPORTS DAY” THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY

WHEREAS, there is need to promote healthy lifestyle by participating in regular exercise, physical fitness, sports and recreation activities;

WHEREAS, the Local Government Code provides for the conduct of sports at the local levels which shall feature traditional sports and disciplines included in national and international games;

WHEREAS, the foregoing objectives can be effectively realized by integrating the “EDI Exercise” activity of the Hataw Bayan Hataw program of the Department of Health (DOH) with the community-based physical fitness and sports programs of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG)/Local Government Units (LGUs).1aшphi1

NOW, THEREFORE, I, FIDEL V. RAMOS, President of the Republic of the Philippines, by virtue of the power vested in me by law, do hereby declare 14 February 1998 and every year thereafter, as “Barangay Hataw Fitness and Sports Day” throughout the country to institutionalize the regular conduct of community-based physical fitness, sports, health and recreation activities of LGUs.

The DILG/LGUs and DOH shall take the lead in the implementation of this activity nationwide in coordination with the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), other concerned agencies and the private sector.

All Governors, Local Chief Executives, barangay officials, Sangguniang Kabataan and concerned local groups and individuals are enjoined to observe the “Barangay Hataw Fitness and Sports Day” in every barangay in their respective localities through the conduct of physical fitness, indigenous games, mass sports and recreational activities for the constituents utilizing their local funds.

Further, the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS), Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), in coordination with the Department of the Interior and Local Government, are hereby directed to issue Circulars to ensure maximum participation of students.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the Republic of the Philippines to be affixed.
