[ Proclamation No. 985, March 26, 1997 ]

DECLARING THE PERIOD FROM JUNE 1 TO 7, 1997 AND EVERY YEAR THEREAFTER AS “PHILIPPINE OPTOMETRY WEEK”

WHEREAS, Republic Act No. 8050, otherwise known as “The Revised Optometry Law of 1995” was signed into law on June 7, 1995, repealing Republic Act No. 1998 or the Optometry Law of 1957;

WHEREAS, the new law reiterates the important role of optometrists as primary providers of eye health care services and as frontliners in the prevention of blindness;

WHEREAS, in recognition of this vital role, there is need to further upgrade the educational, service and practice standards of the profession towards technical proficiency and ethical excellence;

WHEREAS, it is necessary to foster continuing professional awareness on the relevance of professional excellence to the challenges of global competition and the public interest in quality eye care services;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, FIDEL V. RAMOS, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare the period from June 1 to June 7, 1997 and every year thereafter as “Philippine Optometry Week” under the auspices of the Board of Optometry, the Professional Regulation Commission, the Department of Health, the Philippine Association of Optometrists, and other concerned entities.1aшphi1
