DECLARING 1997 AS “TAON NG DIWANG PILIPINO” AND DESIGNATING THE NATIONAL CENTENNIAL COMMISSION TO LEAD IN THE CELEBRATION

WHEREAS, the aggregation of events in 1897 were vital precedence to the concerted struggle for Philippine Independence initiated by Filipino revolutionaries against the oppression of foreign colonizers;

WHEREAS, it is exigent that we commence to heighten our sense of patriotism by inculcating the same spiritual values which inspired and guided our forebears towards the actualization of our national sovereignty;

WHEREAS, as we approach the centennial of our independence, there is a need to project these values on a national level for the Filipino nation, particularly the youth, to emulate;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, FIDEL V. RAMOS, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare the year 1997 as the “Taon ng Diwang Pilipino” as an enduring tribute to all Filipinos who, directly or indirectly, impelled the nation to the cause of freedom, justice, and Philippine independence.

The National Centennial Commission, tasked to spearhead the preparations for the countrys centennial celebrations, is hereby directed to lead and oversee all the necessary and fitting activities in the celebration of the “Taon ng Diwang Pilipino” to ensure its success.

The Commission authorized to call on any department, bureau, office, agency or any instrumentality of the government, including government-owned or controlled corporations for such assistance as it may need in discharging its functions.

Non-government organization, the private sector and other sectors of society, particularly the youth, are hereby enjoined to participate in the observance of the “Taon ng Diwang Pilipino”.1aшphi1
