[ Proclamation No. 237, April 4, 1988 ]

DECLARING THE MONTH OF JUNE OF EVERY YEAR AS PHILIPPINE ENVIRONMENT MONTH.

WHEREAS, Proclamation No. 1149, dated June 1, 1973, declared the fifth day of June of every year as World Environment Day in consonance with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. 2994, dated December 15, 1972, declaring the fifth day of June of every year as World Environment Day and urging governments in the United Nations System to undertake on that day activities reaffirming their concern for the preservation and enhancement of the environment;

WHEREAS, the observance of World Environment Day in the country is not only a gesture of Philippine support to the cause of enhancing world ecology, but also a recognition of the imperative need to instill environmental awareness and concern among the various sectors of the Philippine society;

WHEREAS, the protection, management and development of our environment is one of the major concerns of the Philippine Government;

WHEREAS, since 1973, the June 5 celebration of World Environment Day in our country has been participated in by a limited sector of our society;

WHEREAS, during the last fifteen years, public awareness and concern over our environmental problems and their impact on the economic, social, political, cultural and moral life of our people has remained insignificant;

WHEREAS, while maintaining the observance of June 5 of every year as World Environment Day, there is a necessity to heighten the environmental consciousness of our people and to generate greater participation and integration of efforts through the extended celebration of environmental protection concern and awareness in the country;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, CORAZON C. AQUINO, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare the month of June of every year as Philippine Environment Month.

I call upon all citizens and residents of the country regardless of race or creed to support and participate actively in the observance of the Philippine Environment Month, and to give generously their time and effort towards the protection, enhancement and development of our environment.

I also call upon all government agencies, offices, bureaus and instrumentalities including government-owned or controlled corporations to extend their support and cooperation to the month-long observance.ℒαwρhi৷
