[ Proclamation No. 42, November 21, 1986 ]

DECLARING DECEMBER 1, 1986 TO DECEMBER 1, 1987 AS “THE YEAR OF THE MARTYRS”.

WHEREAS, the wave of terror and repression unleashed by the Marcos regime has caused untold suffering upon the Filipino people;

WHEREAS, amid the unjust and repressive rule of the Marcos regime, many worked valiantly for the restoration of democracy in the country, with many giving up their lives for that noble cause;

WHEREAS, it behooves the Filipino people to be more vigilant than ever in preserving their freedoms, defending their rights, and resisting any effort to restore a regime of dictatorship in the country, motivated by the supreme example of those martyrs and victims of authoritarian rule;

WHEREAS, the honor these martyrs so richly deserves must now be rightly conferred unto them;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, CORAZON C. AQUINO, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare the period from December 1, 1986 to December 1, 1987, as “The Year of the Martyrs”.1aшphi1
